Sebastian (Ephemera, Book 1) by Anne Bishop - She just keeps getting better!

Long ago, Ephemera was split into a dizzying number of magical lands-connected only by bridges that may take you where you truly belong, rather than where you had intended to go. In one such land, where night reigns and demons dwell, the half-incubus Sebastian revels in dark delights. But in dreams she calls to him: a woman who wants only to be safe and loved-a woman he hungers for while knowing he may destroy her.And an even more devastating destiny awaits him, for an ancient evil is stirring-and Sebastians realm may be the first to fall.

She just keeps getting better!
First, as one who sticks almost exclusively to the epic "high fantasy" genre with the occasional sci-fi, Bishop's books are an interesting change. The characters, their thoughts and feelings, trials and hopes, form the basis of these books and the fantasy world comes almost secondary.

But any with a background in fantasy worlds will appreciate Bishop's uniquely designed Ephemera. Tied long ago to the human heart, the land can and will manifest what the heart desires. Giving the turbulent nature of people's emotions, women called Landscapers help nurture the Light positive aspects of these feelings and help guide what is manifested in their particular landscapes.

The landscapes themselves, the bridges between them and how both work are beautifully explained toward the end of the book (though it's not that hard to pick up before then).

What dominates the bulk of this novel, however, is the brewing romance between Sebastian and his Lynnea. Near the start of this book, half incubus, Sebastian has grown tired of the games he plays with women and is looking for something more meaningful (to the dismay of some reviewers and fans of steamy romance). It's easy for one to understand his yearning and sympathize with the character. The exchange that goes on between them for a while is a wonderfully sweet almost classic tale of something being obvious to everyone but the parties involved... and when the two of them finally work it out, you're nearly ready to cheer.

Another seriously pleasant bonus in this book is getting to see disliked characters receive their "just desserts" -- and in most cases, getting to see just how wrong they'd been in the first place.

Excellent!

Those willing to stray a bit from the typical fantasy or romance novel will find a wonderful blend of both in this book. It was hard to put down many times and I ordered the second before I finished with the first.

Great job Ms. Bishop!!
