Polar Star: A Novel (Mortalis) by Martin Cruz Smith - Fantastic writing

He made too many enemies. He lost his party membership. Once Moscow's top criminal investigator, Arkady Renko now toils in obscurity on a Russian factory ship working with American trawlers in the middle of the Bering Sea. But when an adventurous female crew member is picked up dead with the day's catch, Renko is ordered by his captain to investigate an accident that has all the marks of murder. Up against the celebrated Soviet bureaucracy once more, Renko must again become the obsessed, dedicated cop he was in Gorky Park and solve a chilling mystery fraught with international complications.

Fantastic writing
The opening chapter of this book is one of the most beautifully crafted pieces of writing I've ever read. The color, texture and movement of the net being pulled on board and revealing the victim is just stunning.

I love the Renko books; I harbor a secret yen for Arkady. I admire the way Smith writes dialogue for all his characters but particularly the way Arkady's words hold so many different meanings. I also love his characters - even the minor ones like the cafeteria staff or the crew members spring to life on the page as believable people.

The plot of Polar Star was a little tricky, but it worked for me. I love the way Smith creates the environment so that it truly lives for you. Of course, Renko endures all kinds of physical trials and dangers, which makes him a little superhuman, but - hey - I have a crush on him so I don't care.

Finally, I love the multidimensional picture Smith creates of the first victim, as Renko reconstructs her to solve the crime. Really top-notch work.
