Dragon Lady: The Life and Legend of the Last Empress of China by Sterling Seagrave - Compelling storytelling

The author of The Soong Dynasty gives us our most vivid and reliable biography yet of the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi, remembered through the exaggeration and falsehood of legend as the ruthless Manchu concubine who seduced and murdered her way to the Chinese throne in 1861.

Compelling storytelling
While the authors clearly did their research and the story is well-grounded historically, I enjoyed the novel most as a piece of great storytelling. The tale that the authors weave together is beautifully written, compelling, heartbreaking and with drama and suspense in every chapter. The historical background and tidbits were an extra plus! Highly recommended. You don't feel like you're reading history or a biography. Rather, it reads like a Pearl S. Buck novel, and the "dragon lady" is a well-developed, intriguing character that you want to end up rooting for.
