Perfect
My Grandmother died on May 27th and since then my son who is just shy of 4 has been asking so many questions. Weve always used books as a tool for our discussions to help us explain things to him. I bought several books and even though they were good, this book was just the perfect fit for a 4 year old. Its matter of fact, simple to understand- no hidden meanings or euphemisms. Now when he asks why a bug died we can say, That was HIS lifetime or when he gets upset and asks when our cat is going to die we can say, Hes still living in-between and he just gets it. I run an assisted living facility and am ordering it for my resource library so that the residents families can borrow it if necessary.

Marlowes Masterpiece.
If you saw Shakespeare In Love, you know this was the play of Marlowes that was getting so much attention. (For that matter, I found this play better than Romeo and Juliet, even though Romeo and Juliet was to become the big play at the climactic moment.) Moving on, we meet Dr. Faustus, and he decides that the legitimate knowledge of this world is not good enough. So, he decides to cross the line of this far and no further by making an unholy deal. It is interesting that even Mephistophilis (the unholy agent of the devil) is drawn as a figure of sorrow and even tries to warn Faustus about what he is getting himself into. But Faustus is unreceptive to the truth and ignores Mephistophiliss warning. In a scene of shocking horror, Faustus even mocks Mephistophilis for trying to warn him of the dangers involved: Learn thou of Faustus manly fortitude (1.3.85). Faustus makes an unholy pact and sells his soul for books that will offer knowledge beyond the point of this far and no further, as well as significant magical powers. It is interesting that even after Faustus makes the pact, he is presented with several opportunities to escape his fate. But he can not give up the fruits of the pact. (His powers, having Mephistophilis at his command, etc.) Later, we see meet the 7 deadly sins. And Faustuss delight at them shows us his degeneration. In the 3rd and 4th acts, Faustus seems to let go of his quest for knowledge (for the most part) and indulges in practical jokes of an evil nature. There are some who feel that the 3rd and 4th acts are way too silly and that they drag the play down. But, I dont think this is the case at all. I can not help but think that Marlowe was emphasizing how worthless the fruits of the pact really were. (Nothing we could ask the devil for could equal the soul which Christ gave us.) Furthermore, in my opinion, we shouldnt be so surprised at Faustuss degeneration. He has made a pact with evil, and evil is basically degeneration through the service of ones self, depite how amoral and sick that service may be. It is our good side that encourages us to better ourselves, hopefully at least in part for the sake of others. The 5th act begins, and Faustus has one final chance to avoid his fate, but he resigns himself to damnation if he can enjoy Helen of Troy. If I were a betting man, I would bet that Marlowe is emphasizing that sex often overrides our rational thoughts. (How many romance plays seem to defy reason?) The final scene where Faustus realizes that it is too late and hell awaits, is a scene of pure terror almost unparalled in literature. He moves from requests that can not be granted to the most imaginative escapes. The play ends with an appropriate warning to stay behind the line of this far and no further.
Kept my interest!
I love to read, but I am one who has to really concentrate to take in books. Something has to be very interesting for me not to be distracted. I was suprised to find out this book was one that kept me interested no matter what was going on around me. I am very happy I bought this.

The Trumptser Does it Good
A book about success, managing and leading ideas has to include The Donald. This is a very well written book - also a quick and easy read - with many stories about the greatness of Mr. Trump. And when he feigns modesty, Bill Zanker, the founder of the Learning Annex, steps up with some great Trump stories. However, Donald has done and accomplished much - he has been at the top only to fall toward the bottom and then to rise up even higher. This alone is an accomplishment that business managers and future leaders should read about and can learn from.
The book gives specific circumstances and ways to handle them. The Donald, being such a well known public figure that always appears to tell it like it is, brings to the book a familiarity and personality that we know and can relate to - even though very few can much the wide breath of Trumps activities. Bill Zanker started a small business that grew after he made a bold move by paying Donald Trump $1,000,000 to make a presentation at his Learning Annex and promising Trump he would deliver 15 to 20 times more students than had previously attended a single program.
The book is written in a parallel style with Trumps stories and advise and Zankers experiences growing his business. I like it - if anything it keeps the pace moving. The main focus of the book is thinking big, bold and out of the box. The kick ass part is not much of my liking, but because of the gossipy style, keeps the book moving.
Some of the specifics in the book are the need to surround yourself with great dedicated and bright people, recognize the time that bold moves are necessary and acting on them, have a passion for what you do, importance of the right timing, using your instincts but only after youve done all your homework and gathered all your backup support - no one becomes successful like Trump without planning, preparation and hard work. Trump uses a quote by golf legend Gary Player who has said the harder I work, the luckier I get. Not to fall into clichés, some are fully appropriate and there is a chapter subheading that says Good luck happens when opportunity meets preparation.
Other things in the book talk about being open to new ideas and opportunities, making learning fun, leveraging momentum, be focused, branding is important - it tells people what to expect and a high end quality brand makes it easier to deal, always have a prenuptial agreement - and a business shareholders or partners agreement, look successful - how you dress is important, and enjoy what you do.
I dont agree with the revenge part of the book. My way of dealing with people who screwed me is put them out of my mind and forget about them and not waste any energy on them - except if I cross paths with them in a new deal and then I do what I could to have them not get too far in that endeavor.
Best scone recipe book
The only problem with this book is that my Mom & I have used it so much that I had to buy my own copy. Most of my favorite rcipes for scones are found in this book. I get asked for the recipe every time I make a batch and take it into work, church, etc. Easy recipes and a wonderful variety.

An amazing look at the perceptions of the world in an old-fashioned style
Flatland is quite an interested and at times, mindblowing piece of writing. The novella length story can be seen as an expansive, yet fictitious look a a unique and possible world or can be perceived as an interesting look at our world from a vantage unlike any other and in this, there are many strong implications. This is a must read for any math lover or sci-fi fan.

If You Didnt Think Alice in Wonderland Could Get Creepier...
Alice in Wonderland was a book that I enjoyed in my childhood, but that somehow creeped me out. There is something very unnatural about someone named the Mad Hatter, who, by the way, will be played by Johnny Depp in an upcoming version (run to your local theater and see Public Enemies). While some kids (and adults) just fell into this world with no problem, the analytical side of me did not really want to read about a cat who smiled all the time and about two creatures named Tweedledum and Tweedledee. McMahon masterfully takes this strange world that Carroll created and inserts it into Island of the Lost Girls. It begins with Rhonda watching, unbelievably, as a six-foot tall person dressed as a rabbit kidnaps a young child. Feeling guilty about doing nothing, she helps the investigation. McMahon reminds me of Picoult; however, instead of telling the story from different viewpoints, she tells it from different time periods. The book chillingly weaves together the story of the present with the past....Rhondas best friend, Lizzy, vanished years ago when they were kids. It will leave you breathless as you try to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Dont plan on reading this on vacation, as you will not want to do anything else but read! Cant wait to put this into practice
This is a really in depth look at infant hygiene, which is prefect for people like me that really want all the information they can get on a subject, not just the basic overview. I really appreciated all of the research Bauer did, and I cant wait to use natural infant hygiene with my child. Upon first hearing the term Diaper Free most people get the wrong idea, assuming an infant has no awareness of their bodily functions, and being diaper free would mean allowing your infant to go all over the place. When you are done reading this book you will begin to understand that Natural Infant Hygiene is not new, but the natural way of caring for and an infants elimination needs. It is practiced all over the world and always has been. The other thing people might assume is that it is too hard, or too time consuming. The truth is that its actually easier and faster with better results than the standard diapering and potty training model we are accustomed to. I will be proud to not only deepen the bond with my child, but significantly decrease my impact on the environment and my pocket book!
The One Straw Revolution. The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with the Work of One Man
I mentioned in In Search of Simplicity: A True Story that Changes Lives the inspiration I had received from Japanese scientist and farmer, Masanobu Fukuoka. He found through trial and error a number of secrets that nature revealed to those prepared to work with her and to observe keenly. This knowledge didnt come easily to Fukuoka. He openly revealed in his writing that he almost killed the existing citrus trees when he first took over his fathers farm. But his wisdom, presented in books such as The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (New York Review Books Classics) is a palpable testimony to the unswerving dedication of one man.
Fukuoka maintains that our societys motto seems to be that `Bigger is Better. People want to feel important through `important jobs. He saw that agriculture, in Japan and elsewhere in the modern world, has come to rely on chemicals and machines. In order to pay for the costs of these inputs farmers aim for higher yields and people get busier and busier.
Fukuoka suggests we can look at how plants grow in Nature--effortlessly. If man could work with Nature to grow his food he could live without much work and exertion.
After leaving his work as a trained microbiologist and research scientist, Fukuoka began to search for methods of growing that were more natural than the modern trends that surrounded him.
He developed a method of growing rice that involves no digging, ploughing or machines. He walks through his field(s) of high standing rice just before the time of harvest, hand sowing seeds of winter grain--usually barley--and white clover. After harvesting the rice, the rice straw is left lying on the ground as mulch and to return organic material to the soil. Some chicken manure is added.
In time the winter grain and clover seeds germinate and grow. Clover fixes nitrogen for the barley, reduces weed growth and its roots break up the soil.
Rice is usually sown in the spring, when heavy rains help it to germinate and discourage the growth of the clover. Barley straw is left on the ground, again as mulch and to improve the soil. Fukuoka hasnt ploughed his fields in decades. In that time the soil has dramatically improved. Microbes, worms and other creatures broke down organic material and, together with the roots of plants, aerated the soil. He experienced little insect and pest damage, hypothesising that the plants grew stronger and more resistant in the undisturbed soil.
He decided to plant a steep hillside with citrus trees, without resorting to the building of terraces. He started out by dynamiting holes in the rock-hard soil for mandarin and orange trees. In time, he found an easier and more natural way. Fast growing acacias were established to fix nitrogen. Within seven years each tree was the size of a telegraph pole and could be cut down for firewood. The citrus trees were under planted with comfrey, burdock and daikon (long white radish, a traditional Japanese vegetable). The soil is now richer and more manageable and it supports low care vegetables (even comfrey roots are eaten and are claimed to be delicious) and a nearly pest-free citrus crop. He plants a few acacias each year to ensure a constant supply of firewood for heating and cooking.
Fukuoka states that chemically-grown vegetables may be considered as foodstuffs but not as medicine, whereas organic, naturally grown plants can be considered to be both medicine and food. This sounds like Hippocrates saying 2400 years earlier, Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
Fukuoka warns of the dangers of Europeans dedicating so much of their arable land to wine grapes and livestock. He says that an equivalent acreage, dedicated to the growing of grain and vegetables, could support many more people. He is concerned that the industrialization of society is wasteful and polluting. In Japan sulphur dioxide from factories changes into sulphuric acid in the atmosphere, and has resulted in the widespread death of native pine trees. He sees that the world is moving forward quickly and without regard for the consequences of rapid change. In the West, people are separated from nature and industrial agriculture is based on what he considers contempt for Nature. In Japanese philosophy God is in Nature, the wind and the rain and the plants, in everything. Since God is in rice, eating rice in a conscious way puts one on the same level as God. He urges everyone to turn back to Nature for solutions. He says anyone can use `Natural Farming. What he calls The Great Way has no gates.
The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (New York Review Books Classics) is Masanobu Fukuokas manifesto about farming, eating, and life. In reading it I could see and feel that for Masanobu growing and eating food is indivisible from spirituality. What a contrast and challenge to the present global systems of food growing and procurement. Read this book and be inspired to be the change you want to see in the world.

scholarly, yet readable
For decades Ive been wandering about with a mish mash of semi-contradictory ideas about the constitution. Mr. Amar has managed to correct, justify, and reframe most of them into a (_thoroughly_ documented) coherent whole.
Where the constitution is unclear, he quotes the debates and letters of the founders explaining what they meant. Where there is modern debate, he footnotes where to look for different viewpoints. Where there was debate during the writing of the constitution, he tells you who said what and why.
That would probably be enough to earn 5 stars, but he somehow managed to turn an erudite treatise on the history of one government into a page-turner. I dont know how, but there it is...

Great book about anorexia
Deborah Hautzig gives a great insight of the daily life of someone who has anorexia nervosa. This book tells the story of a girl fighting anorexia while also fighting with troubles at home. As the book progresses her daily things get harder and is eventually put into a special hospital where they force her to eat. Based on the authors lifetime experiences. A definite good read.
Hilarious!
I laughed out loud constantly while reading this book. I think you have to know where the author is coming from in order to fully appreciate Lake Wobegon Days. My parents grew up in a small midwestern town, and I spent the early years of my life there too. Again and again, this book reminded me of stories my dad told me and things I remember from my own childhood. This book would be especially enjoyable for anyone who understands or appreciates small-town life.

This is a beautiful love story from the 1970s Iran. Very heart warmong and touching story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Men, women, Persian or non-persians, every one will enjoy this ook.

Before he can trade it for food to get his family through the hard winter, it hatches a beautiful sapphire-blue dragon, a race thought to be extinct. Eragon bonds with the dragon, and when his family is killed by the marauding Razac, he discovers that he is the last of the Dragon Riders, fated to play a decisive part in the coming war between the human but hidden Varden, dwarves, elves, the diabolical Shades and their neanderthal Urgalls, all pitted against and allied with each other and the evil King Galbatorix. Eragon and his dragon Saphira set out to find their role, growing in magic power and understanding of the complex political situation as they endure perilous travels and sudden battles, dire wounds, capture and escape.
In spite of the engrossing action, this is not a book for the casual fantasy reader. There are 65 names of people, horses, and dragons to be remembered and lots of pseudo-Celtic places, magic words, and phrases in the Ancient Language as well as the speech of the dwarfs and the Urgalls. But the maps and glossaries help, and by the end, readers will be utterly dedicated and eager for the next book, Eldest. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
book review for eragon
I recently read the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I found the book to be very descriptive and a great example of the fantacy genre at its best. The author really added depth to the characters especially Eragon Saphira and Roran. There were always twists and turns that were not expected. I highly recommend this book and the others in the series.
For people who want a teacher
This book is for the following person: A programmer who woke up one day and said Wow, Id really like to make a Game Engine. Where do I start? How should I plan this thing out? What kinds of things do I have to implement? What things should I be worried about?
The code is solid, with just a few exceptions that a good programmer should be able to catch. The author speaks German, so hell occasionally ramble about the war and whatnot, but overall hes a good teacher. Hes answered questions about the tiny problems with his code, but youll have to check out the forums at his Gaming University website (not his German one. Unless you happen to speak German)
He doesnt go in depth into many things because his book is designed to get you started, and show you all the steps youll have to take in your game-engine education. That being said, you WILL create a fully functioning first-person shooter engine at the end of the book.
Its written at a reasonably moderate level, so I suggest that you learn DirectX 9 and C++ ahead of time, but once youve done that youre good to go. It provides a good birds-eye view of the game engine process, shows you how to make each little bit in a modular, reusable way, and puts together a lovely result.
One of the reviews on this page suggests the purchase of the Game Programming Gems series. Now, as nice as that series is (And it is nice), Game Programming Gems is about tiny bits of code that make a project more exciting. In fact, Id have to say that Game Programming Gems has absolutely nothing to do with Game Engine Design. Heck, its the polar opposite of 3D Game engine Programming. Gems are fragments- This book is about bringing everything together.
A better suggestion would be to use the Game Programming Gems series to make this books engine more impressive.
Hilarious and thought-provoking
Though not his best work, and not what I would recommend to the uninitiated Vonnegut fan, this book is well worth the price and an excellent read. I could hardly put it down. My recommendation: order every book he published and read them all. Then, wait a year and read them again.
Entombed
This mystery involves a female lawyer from the New York City prosecutor's office who specializes in Special Victims Unit. She has two mysteries to solve. The first is the return of an unidentified rapist the media had previously named "The Silk Stocking Rapist." That mystery is actually secondary to the second mystery - a skeleton discovered in the basement wall of a building being demolished by the New York University Law School, a building in which Edgar Allan Poe used to live. The two mysteries are connected by the perpetrator of the second mystery, who copies the perpetrator of the first mystery to cover his murder of the one person who can identify him. It was well-written but I did feel that the end left several loose ends untied.
The solutions manual provides in-depth, worked-out solutions for all the end of chapter problems. This manual was prepared by the authors.
Regarding Science-Ejected Vitalism, 1995:
Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny.

Reading World of _I Married A Communist_
The readingworld of books that affect the reader's sense of being in that world (like Pereira Declares [Sostiene Pereira] by Antonio Tabucchi) helps readers to understand their personal world. Philip Roth's Nathan Zuckerman grew up in a time that mirrors the time since 9/11 [2001-2008] as a difficult time for thoughtfulness and inquiry. The readingworld of I Married a Communist (1998) illuminates the early 1950's, an era of witch hunt and blacklist. Robert Kelley in the NYTBR observed:

Great book set
I'm grateful to have the original and the sequel in one box set. Loved the original more than the sequel; however they are both great.
Reviewing Oedipus Rex
This was an excellent play, entertaining and easy to read. You understand how Oedipus came to power in the manner in which he did, and what became of his kin. I would recommend it to anyone who has been a bit intimidated by the "old classics." I can hardly wait to see a play about Oedipus Rex!
A must read before starting statins
Having witnessed side effects from long term use in a loved one and my own short-lived experience of Lipitor, this book is a must read. The author has legitimate credentials from the medical community and NASA. His story and the cases he reports of transient global amnesia are beyond frightening. This information more than supported the reasons I discontinued Lipitor after a few days. Don't be a human guinea pig for pharmaceuticals.
great information for someone who wants it all
This book was fun and fascinating. It had a lot of facts and lore included as well as delicious recipes and pictures. It goes through the basics, such as terms and descriptions, as well as gives tips in each section. I have many cocktail books, but will refer to this one time and time again. It should be on everyone's shelf!
Sci-Fic at its best!
Great book! I thought the detail and the way it tied everything in was wonderful. It does have a few words that could have been left out...but all-in-all...Great read!
Welshs brutally honest prose and gallery of likeable neer-do-wells are in full display here, but the novel feels somewhat superfluous. Porno adds little insight into the characters or events of Trainspotting and fails to match its invention or sense of purpose. However, the authors obvious affection for these characters and dedication to authentically rendered dialogue and setting elevate Porno above mere slapdash reworking. As the novel builds momentum, Welsh wonderfully communicates the intense bravado driving his reckless characters. During such moments of vitality and humor, Porno is superficial but undeniably charming. --Ross Doll
Spice ay Life
Welsh's novels have always been let-downs after the magnificent epic of Trainspotting. Though Porno has a smaller scope, it is a.) a longer book and b.) a showcase of a far more talented writer than the Welsh of Trainspotting. The first 100 pages had me feeling doubtful, could this really provide me with a satisfying conclusion (for now) of the lives of Rents, Sick Boy, Spud etc? In fact, the complex psychological undertones of the novel left me feeling both viscerally satisfied and amused at the antics of some of modern literature's best characters. If you've liked anything Welsh has written, read this!
Great read
This book is definately one of all-time favorite reads. I could not put it down, and when I did, I almost wanted to cry because it was over. It was as if I had grown with this woman, experienced everything with her, and the ending of the book put a direct end to our relationship. Not very many books move me in such a way.
I think it was well-written...had it not been I wouldn't have been so emotionally-tied to the characters.
I recommend this book to everyone-hopefully it will move you as much as it has moved myself.
