SIMPLE, yet very INFORMATIVE...by a Home School Mom
William Linney obviously has the gift of simplifying difficult subject matter! This book starts with a simple word, "nauta" (sailor) and works forward. New nouns and verbs which relate to the theme of land/sea/sky are introduced one by one...like building blocks. Simple sentences are formed right from the beginning.
The author teaches how to simply recognize the parts of speech that words play (subject/verb/direct object)...and how to apply the different suffixes that match those parts...(Nautum, Nautae, Nautas, etc.) Without too much effort, you find that you have been given the basics which allow you to read and write Latin.
Obviously, the more words that a student continues to add to his vocabulary, the more fluid in Latin he becomes. The author has carefully selected clever, new words for subsequent lessons. Each new lesson is eagerly anticipated making learning fun!
Nautae aquam amant. (Sailors love water.)
This book created a desire in my three home schooled sons to continue learning Latin. We have, thus, purchased another well reviewed Latin series, Lingua Latina, pars I, Familia Romana...along with a Latin dictionary!
Hats off to the author for using his gift in teaching to create such a wonderful book that motivates others to explore Latin. If you are looking for an extraordinary Introductory Latin book that sparks a flame...you will find that this book is a jewel.
