Too Big to Miss: An Odelia Grey Mystery by Sue Ann Jaffarian - An Excellent Introduction to My New Favorite Mystery Heroine

Too big to miss--thats Odelia Grey. A never-married, middle-aged, plus-sized woman who makes no excuses for her weight, shes not super woman just a mere mortal standing on the precipice of menopause, trying to cruise in an ill-fitting bra. She struggles with her relationships, her crazy family, and her crazier boss. And then theres her knack for being in close proximity to dead people . . . .

When her close friend Sophie London commits suicide in front of an online web-cam by putting a gun in her mouth and pulling the trigger, Odelias life is changed forever. Sophie, a plus-sized activist and inspiration to imperfect women, is the last person anyone would ever have expected to end her own life. Suspecting foul play, Odelia is determined to get to the bottom of her friends death. Odelias search for the truth takes her from southern California strip malls to the world of live web-cam porn to the ritzy enclave of Corona del Mar.

An Excellent Introduction to My New Favorite Mystery Heroine
Spoiler alert. I started reading Sue Ann Jaffarian's Odelia Gray mysteries out of order, with Booby Trap, and am now going back and reading the others. WOW did Too Big to Miss pack a punch, establishing plus-size paralegal Odelia Gray as a woman not to mess with. This book has her investigating an apparent suicide by her plus-size activist friend Sophie London, who was seen live on the Internet committing suicide by shooting herself.

Yet that seems fishy to Odelia and to Sophie's friend Greg Stevens. The pair team up, with Odelia doing most of the work looking into Sophie's complicated love life and past, while dealing with missing her friend and being sad at not knowing about major aspects of her life. Odelia's budding relationship with Greg is set against the backdrop of the investigation, which takes many twists and turns dealing with sex, power and money. Jaffarian keeps us guessing right until the end (I had a hunch that was dead wrong) and has Odelia fighting for her life, facing gunpoint for the first (but not last) time.

Odelia is spunky, outspoken, and pretty much fearless. This is a fun mystery series that adds a significant dose of sass to the cozy mystery genre and has me greatly anticipating Odelia's next move. Well-plotted and also offers a bit of a look at the webcam industry and those who lust after BBW.
