A Dogs Life: Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin - A wonderful book

Squirrel and her brother Bone begin their lives in a toolshed behind someones summer house. Their mother nurtures them and teaches them the many skills they will need to survive as stray dogs. But when their mother is taken from them suddenly and too soon, the puppies are forced to make their own way in the world, facing humans both gentle and brutal, busy highways, other animals, and the changing seasons. When Bone and Squirrel become separated, Squirrel must fend for herself, and in the process makes two friends who in very different ways define her fate.

A wonderful book
Although this is a juvenile title I picked this up to read at the library, (it just caught my eye for some reason), and it is a wonderful book. Not only is the story and adventures described enthralling, the message behind the book is so important for children AND adults to "get": that animals have feelings and should be treated humanely. Children's books that are obviously preachy and moralistic usually turn readers off, for good reason. The author of this book has done a wonderful job presenting an adventurous tale from a canine heroine's point of view. I cried while reading this and I do NOT cry easily! A great gift for any animal loving child who also likes to read, and maybe even for young adults as well as old adults!
