Growing up in the Midwest, Susan Shapiro knew at a young age that all she wanted in life was to become a writer. And so, as soon as she graduated from college, she headed straight to New York City, determined to break into the biz. A few hard knocks later, she learned that it takes more than being a good writer to make a living at it — the most successful professional writers, she discovered, have great mentors to support, promote, advise, admonish, inform, infuriate, and sometimes give them a good kick in the pants along the way.
Only As Good As Your Word is a rollicking chronicle of Shapiros coming of age as a journalist and author. Its also a revealing memoir that proves what Shapiros been saying all along: The most important lessons about writing really are, at heart, important lessons about life.
A must-read for all writers in the publishing trenches, from the very green to the veterans.
My First Reading From Author Susan Shapiro
I found this book "Only As Good As Your Word" to be such an inspiration. Susan Shapiro describes in great detail the trials and tribulations that took place in
her long journey to become a writer. To be honest, it was the title of the book
that caught my attention. I love the title!
I believe all writers are motivated by some means or another, and I became quite interested in her "Writing Lessons from My Favorite Literary Gurus".
I enjoyed her open and honest reflections throughout the book, as well as her
counseling guidance and references.
In truth, I did not know if I would indeed enjoy reading this particular book, but
when I began to read it, I couldn't put it down. It was not only entertaining, it was full of informative information.
As an inspiring 'want-to-be' writer, I could relate to Miss Shapiro words; her deep passion for the written word, and her love of poetry made me admire her
expressive style.
I would definitely recommend this book to those who like to read, as well as to
those who like to write. The book is such a memorable read, and it conveys such a sense of utter sincerity. I can hardly wait to read more of Susan Shapiro!
